Introduction:

Generator is a machine which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The energy is produced due to the dynamically induced emf. When a conductor is linked with the magnetic flux, it causes a change in flux and emf is induced according to the Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction. The direction of the magnetic field can be found by using Fleming’s right hand rule. The essential requirement of a DC generator are:

  1. Magnetic Field
  2. Conductor or group of conductors
  3. The motion of conductor w.r.t magnetic field

Construction of DC Motor and DC Generator:

The DC motor and DC Generator have the same construction. Any DC Generator can be run as a DC Motor and vice versa. All DC Machines have the following principal parts:

  1. Magnetic frame or Yoke
  2. Pole core and Pole shoes
  3. Field Coils or Field Winding
  4. Inter poles or commutating poles
  5. Armature and Armature Winding
  6. Commutator
  7. Carbon Brushes and Brush Holder
  8. Rocker
  9. Side Covers or End Housing
  10. Shaft
  11. Bearings
